Welcome to Mainz

The 2000 year old city of Mainz is centrally located in the heart of Europe, at the banks of the Rhine River, and in the middle of the larger Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region.

Mainz is quickly accessible by Europe’s second largest airport in Frankfurt, by road, rail, or even ship. With Germany’s fifth-largest university Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, two universities of applied sciences, and a number of medical treatment centers and research-oriented companies, Mainz is a dynamic center of scientific research and development. The continuous generation of knowledge, the cooperation and exchange as well as the transfer of knowledge and technology in business and society have earned Mainz the distinction of City of Science.

Arrival

By plane:
Barely 30 minutes away is Frankfurt Airport, served by more than 112 international and domestic airlines. In addition to taxis, there are regional fast train “S-Bahn” connections that take you straight into Mainz.

By train
Rail travel to Mainz is easy. More than 160 local, regional, national and international trains arrive daily at the central rail station in downtown Mainz. High-speed ICE and other express trains linking northern Germany with Switzerland, Italy and Southern France stop at Mainz, and trains from all parts of Germany and Eastern Europe connect.

The Rheingoldhalle Conference Center is located in the center of town, on the banks of the Rhine River: Rheinstr. 66, 55116 Mainz, Germany. The Hilton Hotel is connected to the Rheingoldhalle Conference Center.

Explore the Old Town

Attractive squares, beautifully maintained half-timbered houses, and magnificent churches give the Old Town of Mainz its charming character. Behind medieval and baroque facades you will find elegant boutiques, cafés and wine taverns.

For over 1,000 years, the city’s skyline has been dominated by one building, Mainz Cathedral. Towering majestically in its central location, the cathedral is one of the most important churches in Germany. Its foundation stone was laid in 975 AD under the aegis of Bishop Willigis. In its shadows lie the medieval and early modern quarters of Mainz. The hustle and bustle centers around twisting, narrow lanes, as well as many small shops, boutiques and cafés surrounding pretty Kirschgarten square with its romantic timber-framed houses and Marienbrunnen fountain. In the evenings, one thing is plain to see: Mainz is Germany’s wine capital and locals enjoy the fruits of the winegrowers’ labor in cozy bars and taverns with pious names like Holy Ghost, Pulpit and Confessional.

The City of Gutenberg

When in 1450 Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz invented modern mass printing with moveable type, he initiated an information revolution that greatly expanded opportunities for literacy and learning. In Mainz, you can experience 4,000 years of writing, printing and media history in the Gutenberg Museum.

A whole summer festival is dedicated to the famous son of Mainz, the university carries his name and the history of Gutenberg figures prominently throughout the city. Take a look at his statue on the square in front of the theater near the main market place.

The Gutenberg Museum, which lies opposite the cathedral in the heart of the old part of Mainz, is one of the oldest book and printing museums in the world. Founded by a group of Mainz citizens in 1900, the museum is dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg and his inventions. In 1999, Johannes Gutenberg was voted the Sunday Times “Man of the Millennium” in a unique poll of the world’s most powerful and influential people.
